The stunning Machiya stool is created by Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto. He drew his inspiration from a traditional Japanese house style known as Machiya which is built by connecting small houses next to each other and created to use small space efficiently and functionally. Wooden lattices characteristically adorn the facade.
Jin Kuramoto designed both a bench and a stool so that they could used as a combination or individually to create a calm and relaxed atmosphere within the space available. The seating surface is composed of beautiful line and cross work creating a comfortable seating experience. The space under the seat for storage is reflecting the wisdom of the Machiya style to use space efficiently.
The Machiya is handcrafted by skilled wicker makers of environmentally sustainable material rattan. Rattan is extremely flexible and when steamed it can be shaped by hand, using traditional manufacturing techniques and a few simple tools. Rattan is the most sustainable material for furniture manufacturing as it regenerates in 5-7 years. Rattan comes in a wide range of 600 different variants but Sika-Design use only the finest quality, Tohiti and Manau.
The Machiya Stool is part of Sika-Design's ICONS collection which represents designer furniture by some of the world?s greatest designer and architects.
